New Research Project: ML Technology for Automated Documentation in Vehicle Development

SCALE, in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute SCAI and industry partners Audi, VW, and Porsche, is launching a groundbreaking research project aimed at automating documentation processes in vehicle development. The goal is to significantly improve efficiency and transparency in the product development process through the use of machine learning (ML).

As part of the SAFECAR-ML project (Semantic Change Description for Vehicle Development with ML-based Automatic Classification), innovative methods are being developed to significantly simplify the documentation of changes to virtual vehicle models during crash tests. These tests, which are predominantly conducted virtually today to assess vehicle safety, require time-consuming and costly documentation of the simulated changes. By employing novel artificial intelligence (AI) methods, we aim to standardize the information preparation for this documentation in collaboration with Fraunhofer SCAI and the automotive industry.

The goal is to use machine learning to semantically understand free-text inputs and harmonize the resulting data. This will enable the automatic derivation of further steps and recommendations for action. The close cooperation with the automotive industry opens up opportunities for additional applications in the field of computer-aided engineering.

      Collaboration with Fraunhofer SCAI

The Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing (SCAI) is a leading research institution in the fields of applied mathematics, data analysis, and artificial intelligence. With its expertise in the development and implementation of innovative algorithms and machine learning techniques, SCAI supports numerous industries in efficiently solving complex problems. As part of the SAFECAR-ML project, SCAI contributes its in-depth knowledge in data processing and modeling to significantly advance progress in automotive development.

Funding by the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research)

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) through the funding initiative “Research, Development, and Application of Artificial Intelligence Methods in SMEs (KI4KMU)” and will run from September 1, 2024, to February 28, 2027.

The results of the project will not only provide valuable insights for the automotive industry but are also transferable to other sectors. In this way, SCALE with SAFECAR-ML makes a significant contribution to the digital transformation in product development.
