Research Project: Application of AI in Mechanical Joining Technology

SCALE is proud to coordinate a project aimed at integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into mechanical joining technology. This initiative is part of a comprehensive digitalization effort focused on optimizing manufacturing processes.

      Project Objective

The focus is on the development of an AI-based predictive software, specifically designed for the Clinching joining process. This software aims to enable production planners to choose optimal tools and precisely determine the characteristics of resulting joints based on material properties.

      Expected Benefits

The project aims for a significant increase in efficiency. The utilization of AI technology is expected to lead to a significant reduction in costs and time compared to conventional methods. The project’s target audience expands through the inclusion of structural planners, stemming from improved ML tool set optimization and the implementation of an automated load-bearing determination process for Clinch connections.

Especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) find themselves compelled to optimize their manufacturing processes to shorten labor-intensive development cycles and remain competitive.

This initiative marks a crucial step in the digital transformation of production technology in Germany and could serve as an initial milestone in the integration of AI into traditional manufacturing processes.

      Project Partners and Duration

The project is coordinated by Dr. Ingolf Lepenies and conducted in collaboration with Eckold GmbH & Co. KG and Fraunhofer IWU. The project’s duration spans from October 1, 2023, to September 30, 2025. The collaborative project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
